Arizona House Republicans have moved forward with a legislative package designed to address energy affordability for families across the state. The bills, advanced by the House Natural Resources, Energy and Water Committee under Chairman Gail Griffin, aim to lower gas prices and protect ratepayers from rising utility costs.
Chairman Gail Griffin said, “The cost of living for Arizona families, including gas and electricity, continues to increase, and Republicans are acting.” She emphasized that the package prioritizes affordability by reducing fuel costs and ensuring reliable power as demand grows.
The committee approved several measures targeting high fuel costs in Maricopa and Pinal Counties. These include HB 2145, which allows legislative leaders to request an EPA fuel waiver during shortages; HB 2400, suspending the state’s gas tax in specific counties during summer months; HB 2696, directing the Arizona Commerce Authority to prioritize lowering gas prices; HB 2955, ending the expensive summer fuel blend pending federal approval; and HCM 2008, urging Congress to eliminate the federal gas tax in affected counties during state tax holidays.
Additional legislation requires studies on lower-cost fuel blends and supports voluntary emission reduction programs. Majority Whip Julie Willoughby highlighted the importance of these measures for working families: “Eighteen cents a gallon may sound small to some, but it matters to families trying to make ends meet.”
In terms of energy reliability and ratepayer protection, HB 2331 mandates utilities meet an 85 percent reliable energy standard by 2030. Meanwhile, HB 2756 aims to shield residential customers from higher rates linked to large data center demands.
Griffin remarked on bipartisan cooperation: “Higher gas prices hit everyone… No one wants to pay more at the pump.” However, most bills passed along party lines with Democratic opposition. These proposals now advance for further consideration as part of a broader Republican agenda focused on reducing costs and ensuring dependable power for Arizona residents.
Gail Griffin was elected in 2023 to represent Arizona’s 19th House District after replacing Lorenzo Sierra. She also chairs the House Natural Resources, Energy & Water Committee.
