Congressman Juan Ciscomani hosted Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Administrator Thomas Engels of the Health Resources and Services Administration for a visit to Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District on Apr. 9, where they participated in a roundtable with local healthcare leaders.

The event brought together federal officials and community leaders to discuss advances in southeastern Arizona’s healthcare industry, focusing on topics such as access to healthy food, preventative care, women’s health research, Alzheimer’s disease, and rural medical services.

“It was an honor to join Secretary Kennedy at this roundtable and bring together local leaders alongside a fearless advocate who has championed our shared goal of making America healthy again,” said Ciscomani. “This discussion was an invaluable opportunity to collaborate on how we can advance that mission across Southern Arizona, from supporting our children to strengthening care for seniors in our communities. I am proud of the work our health care leaders are doing in our communities and appreciated learning more about the unique talents and services each of these industry professionals bring to serve our region. I thank the Secretary for taking the time to hear directly from our community and for helping elevate the needs of Arizona’s Sixth District and beyond at the federal level.” Participants included hospital CEOs, physicians, health network executives, and representatives from various medical centers.

During the meeting, Ciscomani highlighted his support for local hospitals by securing $100 million in funding for the Make America Healthy Again initiative (MAHA) in Fiscal Year 2026. This funding aims to boost prevention programs in rural areas, expand telehealth resources for chronic conditions, support nutrition services, improve cancer screening coverage under Medicare through multicancer testing provisions, launch blood pressure monitoring pilots targeting maternal health risks like preeclampsia across twelve states with cuff kit distribution efforts.

Ciscomani has also prioritized women’s health by voting for increased funding—$100 million—for the Office of Research on Women’s Health in FY26 compared with previous years’ allocations; he cosponsored related legislation such as H.R. 7417 (Women’s Heart Health Expansion Act). In addition he supported increases totaling $100 million toward Alzheimer’s research via NIH/CDC budgets (raising total annual research funds up to $3.9 billion), cosponsoring H.R.6130 (ASAP Act) allowing Medicare coverage approval authority over dementia blood test screenings.

Two new Notices of Funding Opportunities were announced during this week: The Residency Planning & Development Program will help establish rural residency programs addressing physician shortages while covering startup costs; past awards include $750k granted locally at University of Arizona Tucson campus according to program information released during visit discussions; The Expanding Nutrition Services initiative expects $125 million distributed among hundreds of HRSA-funded clinics aiming at greater nutrition-based interventions within patient populations.

Juan Ciscomani is currently serving as U.S Representative for Arizona’s 6th district after winning elections against Kirsten Engel both in 2022 (with 50.7% vs Engel’s 49.2%) according to Ballotpedia and again narrowly defeating her by three points during their rematch two years later as reported by AZCentral. He replaced Ann Kirkpatrick when she retired from Congress beginning his term after January 2023 according to Congress.gov. Born in Hermosillo Mexico before moving northward now living permanently Tucson since graduation from University Of Arizona class year BA degree awarded back mid-2000s according Wikipedia.
