Congressman Juan Ciscomani’s bill to honor the late Marana Mayor Ed Honea by naming a post office after him passed the House with bipartisan support on April 14. The legislation, known as the Mayor Ed Honea Memorial Post Office Bill (H.R. 6247), would designate the post office at 13355 North Lon Adams Road in Marana, Arizona, as the Mayor Ed Honea Memorial Post Office.

The measure was co-sponsored by all members of Arizona’s House delegation and aims to recognize Honea’s decades of service to his community. Ciscomani said, “Ed Honea was more than a mayor — he was a lifelong public servant who deeply loved Marana and the people who call it home. From his years as a mail carrier to his leadership as mayor, he led with humility, dedication, and a true commitment to his community. Naming this post office in his honor is a meaningful way to recognize a life defined by service. I’m proud to see this bill pass the House with bipartisan support and to help ensure his legacy continues to inspire future generations in southern Arizona.”

Honea unexpectedly died on November 22, 2024 at age 77. He was born and raised in Marana, graduated from Marana High School in 1965, served during the Vietnam War as part of the U.S. Navy Seabees, and worked for nearly three decades as a contractor for the U.S. Postal Service—at one point delivering mail from what will become his namesake post office.

Jon Post, current Mayor of Marana said: “Ed dedicated his life to serving the Town of Marana, and he often spoke with great pride about his years delivering mail for the United States Postal Service. Those stories reflected his deep connection to this community. I can’t think of a more fitting tribute than to place his name on this building.” Terry Rozema, Town Manager of Marana added: “It’s a tribute to Ed’s lasting impact on this community that we now see his name on the very buildings from which he once served… For those who knew him, it’s a meaningful reminder of the difference one person can make.” Councilmember Patti Comerford stated: “Anyone who ever spoke with Ed knew how proud he was of his years delivering mail for the U.S. Postal Service… He left a lasting impact on this community… He was a great friend, and I miss him dearly.”

Family members also shared their memories about Honea’s dedication both as an elected official and postal worker. Whit Honea said: “Being a postman and a statesman… my dad enjoyed a deeply personal relationship with people of Marana… I am incredibly grateful …for honoring my dad’s legacy.” Tiffany Phoenix recalled childhood memories riding along her father’s route: “Getting to name the place we know so well after him is truly special.”

Ciscomani has represented Arizona’s 6th district since replacing Ann Kirkpatrick in Congress in 2023 according to Wikipedia. He won elections against Kirsten Engel both in 2022 (with just over half of votes) as reported by Ballotpedia and again in 2024 according to Ballotpedia. Born in Hermosillo, Mexico in 1982 before moving into Tucson where he currently lives according to Wikipedia, Ciscomani earned an undergraduate degree from University of Arizona in 2005 as reported by Wikipedia.

The next step for H.R.6247 is consideration by the U.S Senate.
