There were 459 African American students enrolled in Cochise County schools in the 2023-24 school year, a 13.2% decrease from the 529 African American students in the previous school year, according to the Arizona Department of Education.

Data showed that Cochise County welcomed 17,165 students at the time. Among them, African American students made up 2.7% of the student body making them the fourth most represented ethnicity in the county.

Among the 57 schools in Cochise County, Buena High School recorded the highest enrollment of African American students in the 2023-24 school year, with a total of 107 students, making up 6.1% of the school’s total student body.

In 2022 Arizona had roughly one teacher for every 19 students, compared to the national average of one teacher for 16 students. Teachers handling a higher number of students was found to have negative consequences for students’ school performance.
