Senate Republicans in Arizona have commended the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) for its performance over the past year, highlighting a significant increase in audit activity and recommendations aimed at improving government accountability and safeguarding taxpayer funds. The committee, chaired by Mark Finchem, worked with the Office of the Auditor General to produce 239 audit reports and issue 1,078 recommendations during this session. These figures represent an increase from last year’s totals of 206 reports and 945 recommendations.

The Office of the Auditor General is tasked with independently reviewing various state entities to ensure they comply with Arizona law and use resources efficiently. The office conducts performance audits, financial reviews, sunset audits, and special audits to provide lawmakers and the public with information on how government operates.

Senate President Warren Petersen stated, “Protecting the public purse is one of the most important responsibilities of the Legislature, and this year, JLAC has set a gold standard. We are thankful for the exceptional work of Chairman Finchem and the Auditor General, whose dedication to transparency and fiscal responsibility has identified waste, enhanced oversight, and ensured that taxpayer dollars are used appropriately.”

Chairman Mark Finchem added, “The numbers are clear: JLAC is fulfilling its purpose by asking tough questions, demanding answers, and illuminating how the Arizona government operates. I am proud of the Auditor General and her dedicated team for achieving the most productive year in recent history. Without the Auditor General’s outstanding performance, Arizonans wouldn’t have insight into how their tax dollars are spent. I also appreciate the Senate and House’s support as we continue to advocate for accountability on behalf of Arizona taxpayers.”

Warren Petersen was elected as a Republican to represent Arizona’s 14th Senate District in 2023.
