Pima Unified School District has released its reopening plan for the 2020-2021 school year.

"We are hopeful this school year will not experience a harsh disruption like what happened last year," the district said in its letter to parents. "If it does, we are better prepared. We are doing our best to ensure we continue to provide a quality education for all students in a safe and nurturing environment, in partnership with parents and our community."

The initial reopening plan indicates that since community spread is not prevalent in the area, students who wish to do so will return to campus. Should local public health officials determine there is evidence of community spread, additional adjustments will be made to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Elementary (grades K-6) students will begin their school day at 7:50 a.m. Students will be with their classroom cohort all day and special activities, including music and library time, will come to the classroom. Students will have meals in the classroom. The school day will end at 1:50 p.m.

Junior high (grades 7-8) will begin their day at 7:45 a.m. In order to facilitate contact tracing, students will stay with their homeroom cohort all day. Rotation classes are suspended for the time being.

High school students will be divided into A and B groups and will attend classes each day. Should community spread increase substantially, students will transition to a schedule of on-campus instruction two days a week and distance learning two days a week. The school day will start at 7:38 a.m. and end at 3:40 p.m.

In a memo to the Pima Governing Board, Superintendent Sean E. Rickert said on a logistical scale, Pima Schools are adding an additional bus route in the mornings to reduce the number of students on the bus. Afternoon dismissal times have been adjusted to ensure that all routes can be run to get students home. Students will be screened before they board the bus. Students will not be required to wear masks in the classroom unless they are engaged in activities where social distancing is not consistently practicable.
