U.S. Sen. Martha McSally and her Republican colleagues, Sens. Chuck Grassley and Steve Daines, introduced a bill to improve existing programs to protect elderly Americans, as well as assist nursing homes in their efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

McSally said the coronavirus is taking a huge toll on Arizona seniors as nursing homes and assisted living facilities are detected as hotspots for infections.

“Our bill would ramp up COVID-19 testing within senior care facilities and establish rapid response teams to assist nursing homes in crisis,” the senator said on her website. "We also protect our seniors by improving elder justice resources that will help stamp out elder abuse and neglect."

The bill, known as the Emergency Support for Nursing Homes and Elder Justice Reform Act of 2020, seeks to form specialty regional “strike teams,” as well as renew funding allotted under the legislation’s 2009 equivalent.
