U.S. Sen. Martha McSally (R-Arizona) announced that Gila County will receive funds to build a bridge over Tonto Creek after three children died last year.
Gila County will receive $21 million through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Developments (BUILD) discretionary grants program.
“Last November, Arizonans mourned the loss of the Rawlings family’s three young children who died during an accident crossing a flooded Tonto Creek,” McSally said in a release. “No other family should have to experience this kind of unimaginable loss. I took Arizona’s grief and concerns directly to the Department of Transportation to advocate for Tonto Creek Bridge funding. After a phone call with Secretary Chao this morning, I am pleased to announce that Gila County will receive the grant funding I fought for and the county needs. This bridge will provide safe passage over Tonto Creek during flooding, and provide critical access to school, health care and work for residents who must currently take a 75-mile detour during floods. I appreciate the Transportation Department recognizing the lifesaving value of this bridge.”
Since 1995, eight people have died trying to cross the flooded Tonto Creek.
