Eastern Arizona College issued the following announcement on Nov. 20
Dr. Janice Lawhorn, an academic leader and professor of business and computers, has been named interim senior dean over Eastern Arizona College’s Gila County campuses. She assumed her new responsibilities Nov. 1.
“Dr. Lawhorn, with her wide-ranging accomplishments as scholar, leader, and teacher, is uniquely qualified for this position,” said EAC President Todd Haynie. “She is an innovative educator who is admired by her colleagues, and is remarkably effective at moving initiatives forward. Her experience and collaborative leadership style will serve these campuses and the students in Gila County well.”
Throughout her 23-year career in education, Lawhorn has advanced many strategic initiatives and developed new programs that prepare students for in-demand careers. She provides direct supervision for EAC’s Business and Industrial Technical Education Divisions, the cosmetology and prison programs, and the Gila Institute for Technology Career and Technical Education. In addition, Lawhorn directly supervised the EAC Small Business Development Center from 2016 through 2018.
Prior to becoming dean of curriculum and instruction, she taught business and computers for 11 years at EAC, and elementary school for three years at Triumphant Learning Center. Lawhorn is also a faculty associate at Arizona State University where she teaches for the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts.
A dedicated educator with an earnest desire to pave the way for better opportunities for her students, Lawhorn has been recognized with numerous teaching accolades including the Eastern Arizona College Alumni Association’s Outstanding Faculty Award and Rotary International’s Teacher of the Year Award.
“I am equally honored and humbled to take on this role,” said Lawhorn. “EAC values its long-standing partnership with the Gila County Provisional Community College District Governing Board and I appreciate the trust the College has placed in me to continue providing outstanding academic programming and services in Gila County.”
Lawhorn earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education from Northern Arizona University, and a master’s degree in computer information systems from the University of Phoenix. She received a doctorate in education technology management from Northcentral University, and holds advanced certificates from Colorado Technical University and Arizona State University in website design and project management, respectively.
