Cochise College issued the following announcement on Sept. 21.

Eleven students from Cochise College recently completed the paramedic training program. The graduation ceremony was held on Monday, Sept. 20, at the Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate the special moment. “I am very proud of each student as they have persevered.” Kelly Juvera, the director of emergency medical services, said. “They have worked very hard and completed many hours of intensive training.”

Cochise College provides both a certificate and an associate of applied science degree in paramedicine. Certified by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (ADHS-BEMS), the program prepares students to practice as a nationally registered paramedic providing pre-hospital emergency medicine for fire departments, ambulance services and hospital emergency units.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for emergency medical technicians and paramedics is expected to increase 11% between now and 2030 due to the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

The 2020-2021 Paramedic graduates are Eric Bailey, Pete Chavez, Crisanta Corrales, Cody French, Lorena Gilbert, Syble Griffin, Daniel Olea, Jacob Ortega, Hannah Struse, Daniel Valenzuela and James Wallace.

“To the graduates, congratulations. You have achieved something great during a time of crisis – a pandemic,” Dr. J.D. Rottweiler, college president, said in his welcoming remarks. “Your willingness to go above and beyond, finish your studies, and graduate shows persistence and true grit.”
