The Legacy Foundation has announced the award of $550,062 to Cochise College to develop a new behavioral health pathway.
The award will initiate a basic behavioral health certificate program under the direction of Beth Hill, dean of nursing and allied health.
The new program will focus on introducing behavioral health and social services, ethical, legal and professional issues in behavioral health and social services, CPR and first aid, applied therapeutic communication, and case management & clinical documentation.
“Our mission is promoting population health and community wellness. A critical component is mental health,” said Margaret Hepburn, Legacy Foundation CEO. “We decided mental health and behavioral health will be the focus of the Legacy Foundation over the next three years during our grant cycle.”
Pending approval by the Higher Learning Commission, the college plans to open enrollment for the behavior health certificate this fall semester. Students can become certified in one semester.
“The program will create a certification as a behavioral health tech, a position that will help fill the workforce gap,” said Hill. “The behavioral health certificate program will be open to anyone interested in starting a career in behavioral health or advancing their career by adding knowledge and skills in behavioral health.” Tuition and fees will be covered by the grant.
The Nursing and Allied Health programs are located in the Cochise College Downtown Center in Sierra Vista. To learn more about becoming a certified behavioral health tech, call (520) 515-5309 or visit www.cochise.edu/nursing/.
