It was a cool and brisk Saturday evening when the Cochise College Lady Apaches brought down the D-II No. 1 team in the country Phoenix College 4-2 in a close contest. PCC came into the match having won 4 out of the last 5 and coming off of a win against Paradise Valley. Cochise Women’s Soccer kicked off Saturday as winners of 4 in a row, outscoring their opponents 27-3 during that streak.
Phoenix College struck fast and early as Anacel Valenzuela-Acosta tapped in a goal in the 11th minute of play followed by another from Daisy Arrendondo 10 minutes later. It was a fast-paced and aggresive first half of play by both teams as they had a combined 11 fouls going into halftime. Cochise answered back in the first half when Paula Gonzalez Castro (4) and Dayana Gonzalez (3) managed to score one goal each knotting up the score 2-2 at the half.
Cochise managed to control the second half of the match placing a total of 14 shots keeping the pressure on PCC. It wasn’t until the final ten minutes of play where Megan Castricum (6) scored giving the Lady Apache’s the lead followed by an insurance goal by Ivana Siles (8) during the 85th minute. The 4-2 victory over the D-II top team in the nation gives Cochise College (8-3;5-1) their 5th consecutive win as they look for another when they host Chandler-Gilbert CC (4-6;1-5) on Tuesday, October 4th at Cyr Park in Sierra Vista at 6:00pm. Spectator admission is free and all are encouraged to bring their own lawn/folding chairs.
