During February, Cochise College celebrates Black History Month, a time to pay tribute to leaders and role models in the Black community who have motivated and inspired many throughout history.

To commemorate this occasion, Cochise College is excited to bring Hip Hop at 50, an award-winning collection of original artifacts on exhibit from the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, to Cochise County. All are welcome to view the mobile museum. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

In addition, there will be material from Africa, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Jim Crow, Civil Rights Movement and Black Arts Movement on display. Hip Hop at 50 provides a unique opportunity to experience Hip Hop culture through rare primary source material showing a wide variety of ways Hip Hop has made an impact on popular culture.

Dr. Khalid el-Hakim is the founder and curator of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum. Black History 101 Mobile Museum visited 41 states at over 1000 institutions as a premiere traveling exhibit. Dr. el-Hakim has received national and international attention for his innovative work exhibiting Black history outside traditional museum spaces. He is currently a national spokesperson for Toyota’s Need a Nudge campaign, and in 2021 received the Freedom Scholar Award from the Association for the Study of African American Life and Culture. Among other honors, he was named one of the Change Makers for NBC Universal’s Erase the Hate campaign and was one of the 100 Men of Distinction in Black Enterprise Magazine.
