Banner Payson Medical Center issued the following announcement on Nov. 23
Even in a dog-friendly world, things can get unfriendly once in a while. If you or your child have a run-in with a scared or aggressive dog, Jasjot Johar, MD, medical director of the emergency department at McKee Medical Center explains the 5 steps you should follow to handle a bite with care and poise.
Dr. Johar explained that infection is a serious concern, no matter how serious the dog bite. Don’t hesitate to get help from a medical professional at an urgent care or emergency department. If possible, speak with the owner to verify that the dog is up to date with rabies shots. Of course, you may not have time to speak with the owner and in some cases, an owner may not be around. Dr. Johar assured that rabies treatments can be given when those factors are unknown.
Dogs are an absolute joy most of the time and a beloved member of the family. Help prevent dog bites by teaching your children how to safely interact with animals. These sorts of injuries always come as a surprise. Locate the nearest Banner Urgent Care facility today, so that you can act quickly in moments of injury.
