City of Maricopa issued the following announcement on July 20.
Every day, Glennwilde residents Ron and Darlene Guidi wake up, make their bed, grab a few trash bags and head out for their morning walk. The couple moved to Maricopa earlier this year to be closer to their children, residents of Maricopa since 2008. On their walks along the community greenbelts and Pacana Park, Ron and Darlene noticed several areas where litter had collected. Instead of ignoring the problem, the couple say they were motivated to do something through witnessing the actions of other community members.
"We were inspired by three gals we saw walking along a different path that would bring a bag and start collecting trash as they walked," said Darlene. "It was an immediate wakeup call. Instead of complaining, we decided to just do something about it."
And that’s exactly what they did. Since that day, Ron and Darlene carry bags with them on their daily walks, filling up to an impressive four or five on each trip. To make the task fun, the couple even turned it into a friendly competition to see who can collect the most litter. Their efforts to ensure the community remains beautiful comes from a truly inspiring place.
"If we can just clean up a bit and make things look a bit nicer it’s another perk along with the exercise." Darlene mentioned. "Doing something in our neighborhood is our gift to give."
