Cochise College issued the following announcement on Feb. 11.
In March, Cochise College’s First Responders Academy is offering a Wildland Fire course. Community members who want to learn and gain field experience as wildland firefighters can receive real hands-on training. In one week, recruits will learn:
- understanding the behavior of wildland fire
- controlling, containing and extinguishing burning vegetation
- controlling, containing and extinguishing fires in the forest or vacant public land
“Unfortunately, there are wildland fires in the west and a shortage of wildland firefighters,” said Dr. Eric Brooks, Executive Director of the First Responders Academy. “This course aims to get students certified and ready to be hired in Arizona, California, or Colorado before fire season.”
Class runs March 14-18, and registration is open. Recruits in the program will live and train at the Cochise College Douglas Campus. For more information and sign up, call (520) 417-4060, email brookse@cochise.edu or visit www.cochise.edu/first-responders.
