Morenci Unified District welcomed 1,517 students in 2022-23 school year

There were 1,517 students enrolled in Morenci Unified District schools in the 2022-23 school year, 2.8% more than the 1,476 in the previous year, according to the Arizona Department of Education.

Out of the total students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 52.3% of them were boys, and 47.7% were girls.

Data also showed that most of the students were Latino, representing 63.4% of the Morenci Unified District total enrollment.

Morenci Unified District roughly covers schools within Greenlee County and has a main office in Morenci.

Among the three schools in Morenci Unified District, Metcalf Elementary School recorded the highest enrollment of 767 students in the 2022-23 school year.

In 2022 Arizona had roughly one teacher for every 19 students, compared to the national average of one teacher for 16 students. Teachers handling a higher number of students was found to have negative consequences for students’ school performance.

WalletHub claimed Arizona’s school system ranked among the worst across U.S. for class size, performance, funding, safety, and instructors’ credentials.
