City of Maricopa issued the following announcement on Aug. 5.

Six new chaplains have joined the Maricopa Police Department this week. They will serve as a support system for local law enforcement in times of crisis. The primary duties of the chaplains will be emotional and spiritual support to our field personnel and direct emotional and spiritual support to our community during times of crisis.  These Chaplains will work directly with Sgt. Hal Koozer, who also leads our peer support team that assists our MPD employees immediately following critical incidents to address and mitigate emotional trauma.

"I am proud of the great work by Sgt. Hal Koozer who assembled this team of Chaplains.," said Chief of Police James Hughes. "I’m confident they will do great things for our community and represent our city with pride."

The Chaplains will respond to a variety of calls including death notifications and death scenes to provide emotional and spiritual support to our residents during these tragic events. The MPD has initiated the creation of a community faith based advisory board.  The Chaplains will support this advisory board once it is established.
