Recruits at the Southeast Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy class 22-2, participated in an intensive tactical driving training at the Sierra Vista Municipal Airport this week. Instructors with SVPD and Cochise County Sheriff's Office - Mark J. Dannels Sheriff spent 40 hours with the recruits going over fundamentals and conducting practical exercises. Each recruit was expected to demonstrate the fundamentals correctly before moving onto the next exercise.
The practical exercises included: Road Course, Backing, Evasive Lane Change, Perception/Reaction, Controlled Braking, and Pursuit Driving (Day and Night). This training stressed basic knowledge required for the handling and operation of police vehicles both during normal and emergency conditions.
The recruits did have a chance to have a little fun competition among themselves and participated in the Challenge Course, which included combining some of the practical exercises into one exercise. Recruit Justin Joe from the San Carlos Apache Tribal Police Department performed best overall in the Challenge Course!
