The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors has called for a Special Board Meeting to appoint a temporary County Treasurer following the resignation of former County Treasurer Elizabeth Gutfahr. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 18, 2024, starting at 4:15 PM.

A joint statement issued by the Board of Supervisors outlined the events leading up to the appointment of a new Treasurer. It was mentioned that financial irregularities were flagged on County accounts managed by the Treasurer's Office, prompting immediate action by county officials. Following consultations with legal counsel and financial institutions, steps were taken to secure the County's financial assets and initiate investigations.

County Manager Valdez, Deputy County Manager Chavez, and County Attorney Silva notified Treasurer Gutfahr of a special meeting for her suspension with pay, in accordance with Arizona State Statute. Subsequently, Treasurer Gutfahr submitted her resignation, effective April 12, 2024.

In response to the situation, the Board of Supervisors has engaged firms for financial consulting and forensic investigation. The County remains committed to cooperating with the FBI and the Office of The Arizona Auditor General as the investigation progresses, emphasizing their dedication to transparency and accountability in handling public funds.

County Manager Jesus Valdez will be the point of contact for all media inquiries, given the ongoing nature of the investigation and the sensitivity of the matter.
