CITY OF SIERRA VISTA: Shelter suspends cat adoptions, intakes due to respiratory infections

Resp

City of Sierra Vista issued the following announcement on Feb. 28

The Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center is suspending cat adoptions, viewings, and intakes until further notice to help prevent further spread of upper respiratory infections among the felines at the shelter.

The shelter suspended the rental of cat traps to capture strays and asked that cat owners hold off on surrendering cats to the shelter on Feb. 13, when more than a dozen cats sick with respiratory infections were taken in at once. Although those cats were quarantined, several cats in the shelter’s adoptable cat room started showing symptoms of upper respiratory infections this week.

“We need to be cautious and do our best to prevent further spread of these infections while we treat the affected cats, so we can resume adoptions and intakes as soon as possible,” Animal Control Supervisor Arleen Garcia says. “While they are easily spread, these infections are much like a common cold in humans and we expect all of our cats to make full recoveries with some rest and antibiotics.”

Dog viewing and adoptions at the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center are not impacted. Dogs remain available for adoption for a $75 fee, which includes sterilization, the first set of vaccinations, a complete physical exam, City pet license, and a microchip implant.

For more information, call the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center at (520) 458-4151.

Special hours this week

The shelter is located at 6799 E. Hwy 90 and is typically open Tuesday-Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

This week the shelter will be open on Monday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be closed on Saturday, March 7, due to staff availability.
