Arizona Cochise County Republican Committee issued the following announcement on April 27
The Cochise County Library District has completed its quest to find the perfect image for its new library card.
After receiving more than 70 entries in its inaugural photo contest the winning photo is “Poppies in the San Simon Valley,” by Portal photographer Steve Wolfe.
Entries came in from 29 photographers living in every part of Cochise County. Finalists included sunsets, sandhill cranes, and mountain views, along with Wolfe’s winning photo of poppies in bloom.
Library District Director Amadee Ricketts said, “It was very tough to select a winning photo from so many beautiful entries, but this picture stands out because it is such a bold image. Library cards are small, at less than 3 ½ inches wide, and Mr. Wolfe’s photo is eye-catching at any size.”
The announcement of the winning photo follows National Library Week. This year’s theme, “Find Your Place at the Library,” seemed like a perfect fit for a contest all about highlighting the unique beauty of Cochise County. Unfortunately, the entry period, which started March 15, coincided with the public health emergency which has shut the doors of public libraries across the United States.
“We decided to go ahead with the contest because people could still participate from home,” explained Ricketts. “It seemed like a good way to stay connected with our communities, and considering the entries was a real highlight for the library staff who helped with the judging.”
The cost of producing 3,000 new cards will be covered by The Friends of the Library District, and the cards should be ready in late May. After public health guidance allows for libraries to reopen, the new cards will be issued at the rural branch libraries in Bowie, Elfrida, Portal, Sunizona, and Sunsites, phasing out old cards that include outdated information. Limited numbers of the new library cards will also be available at municipal libraries across Cochise County (Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Huachuca City, Sierra Vista, Tombstone, Willcox), while supplies last.
Upon being notified that his photo would appear on the new library cards, Wolfe said, “I'm honored! As you can see it was quite a poppy season here on the east side of the Chiricahuas, one of the best in memory. It's a special place here, even if it is a bit out of the way, so I'm glad to be able to share some of its beauty with library members.”
Wolfe has been a Portal resident since 2014, and you can see more of his nature photography at http://lonewolfephotos.com.
