Cochise County Provides the Community with Proper Disposal of Worn U.S. Flags

In honor of Flag Day, Cochise County today announces the installation of a U.S. Flag Retirement Box now available to all community members who wish to properly dispose of their worn U.S. flag.

In partnership with the National Association of Counties, Cochise County has installed an official “U.S. Flag Retirement Box” in the Board of Supervisors Main Lobby located at 1415 Melody Lane, Building G, Bisbee, AZ 85603. Community members may visit the lobby during regular business hours to formally dispose of faded, torn, or worn U.S. Flags. Flags should be folded respectfully before being placed in the box.

The United States Flag Code prescribes flag etiquette — everything from flying it near other flags to instructions on how to raise and lower it. “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” says the code.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 836 will be responsible for the collection and proper disposal of the worn flags. The group will collect the flags dropped off at the County’s box location and will periodically conduct a formal flag burning ceremony.

“At the ceremony, each flag is properly folded before saluting and placing them in the fire,” says Marty Renteria, Cochise County Web Specialist and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 836. “It’s a wonderful thing, to witness each flag be honored and saluted, understanding that it’s a symbol of our freedom and not just an old piece of material.”

In addition to this new retirement box location, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 836 has another retirement drop box located in Bisbee at 1326 Highway 92.
